Review: Bentonite Powder

Hey Beauties!
I have a new blogging schedule that I worked on over the weekend and
am excited to implement it! More on that another time.
Today I want to review a product that has really helped me on my 'hair journey'.

Quick details, I started dying my hair freshman year of college. After multiple sessions of
adding highlights, I was blonde and stayed blonde for all 4 years. You can only imagine the damage I did to my hair trying to maintain the color. I was bleaching my hair every 2-3 months. Even though it was only pieces at a time, it eventually adds up.

On top of the dying my hair, I was still using heat on it as well. Blow dryer, straightening iron, curling iron every day. My hair was so damaged it would not even curl. I went from having dark brown curly hair in high school to blonde straight hair in college.

Don't get me wrong, I freaking loved my blonde hair. I miss it so much. But the maintenance is ridiculous haha. When I got pregnant I fell into the whole "don't dye your hair while your pregnant" thing. Superstitious or not, I had more important things to save for than my hair at that point anyways. Thank god ombre was becoming a trend because I sure enough let my blonde grow out.

If you guys want a more in depth conversation as to how I started my hair journey, the products I used, etc. let me know in the comments below and I will make a video!

What I am reviewing is something I still use to this day.  I was really looking for ways to restore my curl pattern so that my hair would curl the way it used to. It was brought to my attention by a good friend and I thought I would give it a shot. Bentonite Powder is one of the most effective cleansers found in nature. It can be used on the skin or for the hair. It is an absorbent clay that  draws out impurities deep within the skin.

This powder really worked to help restore and define my curls. It works like a hair 'mud mask'. When you mix the powder with a liquid it swells up like a sponge and turns to mud.

A word of caution: it dries extremely fast! I could be in the middle of a section of hair and can feel the side I already started on drying up.

The bentonite powder I used is from the VitaminShoppe and costs about $4.99.  It is called Aztec Secret: Indian Healing Clay
I personally have not tried to use this as an exfoliator or mud mask because I feel that it may be to harsh for my skin. I would highly recommend that for people with oily skin though.

I begin by applying the clay to the root of my hair since that is where I want to deep clean. I figured that since the healthiest hair is the hair that grows closet to your scalp, then I would start there to cleanse it and hopefully help it form a curl pattern.

I only leave the clay in my hair for no more than 6 minutes, other wise it gets really hard and stiff. To me it's just not pleasant. I then wash it out with a shampoo twice. It may be because I put too much product in my hair but I like to make sure I get it all out.

This powder has no smell to it. It is a bit messy to work with so make sure you have an old t-shirt on and extra towels handy. I started doing this twice a month and now only need to do it once a month. I think it is such a powerful exfoliator and really love the results I have gotten from it.

What are some of your favorite hair restoration masks/methods you have tried?
